The standards of high visibility clothing
EN ISO 20471
The EN ISO 20471 certification sets certain requirements for the visibility of work clothes that must be worn in locations with high risks. Employees wearing clothing with this certification are clearly visible from all angles, day and night, thanks to reflectors and fluorescent material.
EN 17353
This standard specifies the criteria for better visibility in 'medium risk' situations. A distinction is made between protection in daylight (using fluorescent colours) and/or night protection (active when exposed to headlights, thanks to reflective materials). In contrast to the EN ISO 20471 standard, which describes highly visible safety clothing, this clothing can provide protection by exclusively using reflective materials.
Why buy reflective workwear?
In all professions where good visibility is essential, it is important for your own safety and that of others to wear reflective clothing. In some professions, for example if you work on the road or rail, this is mandatory and clothing must meet certain standards. Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), for example, imposes additional requirements on clothing in addition to the European standard EN ISO 20471.
Reflective clothing or high visibility clothing?
Although reflective clothing and high visibility clothing are both intended to make you stand out, there is a significant difference between the two. High visibility clothing is made of a special high visibility fabric (in yellow or orange) and will generally also feature of reflection. The standard that applies to high visibility is EN ISO 20471. Reflective clothing falls under the enhanced visibility clothing standard EN 17353 and is only equipped with reflective bands.
